ABC’s ‘Countdown’ should return, says musician association

THE Association of Australian Musicians has launched a petition demanding the return of music TV show Countdown.

As of posting, almost 3000 people have signed the petition created by the not-for-profit organisation. It’s directed at the ABC.

The petition reads:

“ABC’s charter requires the broadcast of programs that contribute to a sense of national identity and reflect the cultural diversity of the Australian community.

“Classic ABC TV show ‘Countdown’ influenced generations of Australian children with mainstream commercial pop from the major labels, predominantly US and UK.

“We invite ABC to revive ‘Countdown’ as a one-hour show every weekday at 5pm with 100% Australian independent music performed live in the studio.”

The association says its membership includes “some of Australia’s most accomplished, experienced and respected musicians from opera, classical, jazz, rock, pop, blues, indigenous, world, electronica and everything in between”.
